Faithbooking - Scrapbooking Your Spiritual Journey
Tuesday nights during the summer of 2009 will be a special time for women interested in scrapbooking -- not your normal scrapbooking -- but a record of your spiritual journey. We'll meet from 6 - 9 p.m. beginning June 2. Childcare will be available for a nominal fee and you will get lessons on new techniques. Come join us.

Meeting Times/Dates
We will meet Tuesday nights from 6-9 pm starting June 2 – we might consider additional cropping/working time afterwards depending on the desires of the group – there will be 13 sessions in all – each lesson will stand alone, allowing participants to attend when they can. We also might consider an overnight or weekend retreat later in the summer.
Location
We will meet in Fellowship Hall of Kingwood Christian Church – 3910 W. Lake Houston Parkway – at the corner of Brook Shadow and W. Lake Houston across from Greentree Elementary. When you walk up the sidewalk in front of the church, the Fellowship Hall is the building to the right.
Supplies
The faithbooking sessions are free, but each participant is asked to bring her own basic supplies which include:
- A scrapbook – choose your favorite size, style and design
- Paper in the size of your book – you can buy individual sheets, pads or packages with coordinating papers
- Scissors –those for cutting paper are best
- Paper trimmer - 12 in. is recommended
- Adhesive (how are you going to stick things down?)
- Ink pen(s)
When scrapbooking you are looking for supplies that are archival or acid-free. Our favorite stores are Michaels (watch for weekly coupons) Hobby Lobby (coupons) Walmart, Target and even some office supplies or fabric/craft stores like Joann Fabrics. If you are new to all this we can suggest our favorite brands/supplies/stores. You are also welcome to come to the first session and check out what everyone else is using – we can provide what you need to do the first lesson.
Other Materials Available for Sharing
- Laptop computer and printer (no internet) for clip art or word processing
- Cricut – (12x6) personal electronic die cutter
- Sizzix manual die cut system (2 complete fonts) and paddle punches
- Assorted stamps and ink pads
- Assorted punches
- Assorted embellishments like eyelets, brads and ribbons
- Xyron small sticker maker
- Circle cutter, various sizes of trimmers, photo corner rounders, etc.
Childcare will be available in our nursery which is located in the Fellowship Hall. We are asking for a donation of $5 per family per night to help offset the childcare expenses. Childcare will be available by reservation for children 6 and under. Please indicate whether you will need childcare on your registration form so we can be sure to have adequate nursery staffing.
Homework/Weekly Lesson Preparation
We will share some “homework” for each weekly session the week before we meet (we also plan to have the “homework” posted on the church website – www.kwcc.org) This will be the theme/topic for the upcoming week so that you can begin to think, gather photos, find or print favorite scriptures, clip art, etc. and possibly do some journaling to prepare.
For example, one week we might focus on our baptism. In preparation for our session, you might search for photos of your baptism. If, like me, you don’t have any photos of your baptism, you might want to find some clip art or stickers.
You may choose to do some journaling about your memories of your baptism, reflections, etc. Because I was an infant when I was christened, I might talk to my mom, dad and godparents to see what they remember about that day and write those things down.
Although we hope to have a few computers or laptops available for word processing, you might want to type up your reflections and bring the journaling part with you. Then it will just be a matter of laying out your page(s) Or you might want to do your journaling in your own handwriting. Page layouts may be one page or a double page spread - it’s up to you!
Weekly Session Format
We’re making this up as we go along and see what will suit the group, but here’s the idea:
- Gathering Time – introduction of weekly theme/lesson
- Prayer time – to ask God’s spirit of creativity to move with us and through us
- Working Time – fellowship, idea sharing (this will be the largest portion of our time) working on our individual layouts, sharing dessert, and a mini lesson (optional) on some scrapbooking technique or materials, door prizes!
- Sharing time – sharing with the group what we’ve done
- Sharing of the next week’s homework
Faithbooking Q & A
I’ve never done any scrapbooking, but have always wanted to try it. It’s pretty overwhelming. Will I be able to keep up with the pace of these sessions?
Absolutely. This is a perfect opportunity for a first scrapbooking experience because you will have lots of friends around you to offer suggestions, advice (and share cool supplies) More experienced scrapbookers will be able to move at their own pace as well.
Is this group only for women in Kingwood Christian Church? Do I need to worry that you are going to pressure me into joining your church?
No worries. We are offering this new summer group to the women of our church and the surrounding community. It is our sincere hope that ALL women will feel welcome as we record the ways that God is moving in our lives. We promise there will be no pressure to visit our church or join (unless you are looking for a church home – then we would love to invite you!)
I’m interested but already know of several weeks when I’ll be on vacation this summer. Will I get too far behind?
We are purposely designing each week’s theme/lesson to stand alone for this very reason. Come when you can. We hope to have each week’s homework posted on the website, where you can find it. We also plan to have handouts for each lesson so you can finish at home (if needed) or complete the lessons on your own if you wish to.
I’m not a very knowledgeable student of the Bible. Will this be a problem?
This class is not a Bible study, but more like a scrapbooking session with a focus on God in our lives. No Bible knowledge is necessary – but we might share scriptures we love that are relevant to our weekly theme as well as any resources we use to search for appropriate scripture.
I’m not really into the God-thing but I’d like to scrapbook with other women. Can I still come?
Of course – all are welcome. If one week’s lesson (or any of them, for that matter) doesn’t speak to you, feel free to adapt it or disregard. All sharing will be optional.
Let’s talk about food! Who will provide dessert each week? Can I bring my own snacks? What about supper – can I brown bag it?
Our idea is to have a voluntary sign up sheet to rotate who brings dessert each week. Any/all snacks are welcome! Bring what you need/like. As a working gal who works until 5 pm, I’m sure I’ll be flying in each week with a bag from Sonic or a Tupperware container with leftovers. The kitchen is fully equipped with an ice maker, fridge, coffee maker and microwave as well as an oven with a stove top.
I have more questions about this, who can I talk to?
