Kingwood Church breaks down walls and builds a bigger “Table”

Cyber-bullying, twitter-rampages, bitter political feuds, mass shootings, border clashes, children being separated from their parents; these are the types of headlines that we see each day. Walls, both literal and figurative, are being built all around us, all the time. So many walls, in fact, that it can often be hard for someone to find a peaceful place where they can just be themselves. A local Kingwood church is creating a place to help people find what is missing from their lives, in a new community of worship, centered around – a Table.

“The Table” is a new worship service being offered by Kingwood Christian Church starting October 7, 2018. The new service will be a contemporary, Christian worship service, but so much more. It will be a creative community, where people can come to be accepted, to have open and honest conversations about God and the world around them.

Kingwood Christian Church Pastor Chad Mattingly, who will help lead every service at “The Table” while leading a concurrent traditional service, says everyone is welcome.

“There are segments of society that feel like they are complete outsiders,” he says. “That, just because they are who they are, they are excluded.  They are not invited, not welcomed, not told they are beloved, not celebrated for who they are. Around this Table, not only is there going to be space for you, you are going to be offered some pictures of God that you might find surprising. You will find a God that loves you for who you are, and then invites you to follow and make a difference in the world.”

A “service planting” team has been in place for several months working on what this new service will look like.

“When would you ever have the opportunity to create a worship service from scratch?” asked planting team member Anne Amis. “These are things you don’t tamper with. But we questioned the value of every single element of a worship service. So, every bit of it is very mindfully included.”

The team plans to stay on to help facilitate and act as ambassadors once the worship service begins.

While the service will most certainly have exceptional music and inspirational sermons and other aspects you would find in a typical church service, there will be many elements you may be surprised to find. For example, the space won’t be centered around the Pastor, or a stage, or the band, but around a table, handcrafted from diverse types of wood, including boards salvaged from Hurricane Harvey homes.

“What I like about calling it ‘The Table’, is the intimacy it promises,” said team member Linda Goddard. “Just being able to look each other in the eye, have communion, say those words in a close group. I like the prospect that the table draws us together and in closer connection with God. And that we are on a journey and the table is where we come together to share how that journey is going.”

Another big difference about this service is that it will not actually take place inside the Kingwood Christian Church sanctuary, but instead all services will be held inside KWCC’s Fellowship Hall. It is the intention that this will be another way to help break down walls and invite the WHOLE community, including spiritual seekers, faithful believers, those who have been disenfranchised by the church, and those who simply aren’t sure what they believe, to join in celebrating and exploring their faith.

Team members of the service planting team for the Table say That Kingwood Christian Church is already a place where people are invited to have open-minded, authentic conversations about the world today. The main thing is that someone who enters “The Table” gets to be themselves. “We celebrate humanity,” said team member Greg Allen. “We celebrate our differences.”

So, are you SEEKING a place of love and acceptance?

Do you THIRST for a deeper connection?

Are you HUNGRY for a more compassionate world?

There is a place for you at “The Table.”
